Kia ora, I’m going to tell you about the showcase on 28th of September 2022! It opened at 5-6:30 but I came around 5:20. People could bring any food they want! Some people brought dumplings, pastries and cakes! I baked chop chip fudge brownies myself! It was delicious and I couldn’t help eating one before I brought it to the showcase! I arrived with my dad and I put the brownies down on a table and went to look for my art work.
The showcase was super fun! I ate lots of carrots and like 3 of my own brownies. Oops! I played with my friends for a bit and chatted with them. My dad had to park in the court because there was no more space!
There were so many people, I met some children’s mum’s and dads! I found my art work. It was a model of a mine. Everyone in the syndicate had to choose a disaster on the Christchurch library app where u can finds lots of disasters! There were hot air balloon disasters, shipwrecks, mine incidents, volcanoes, earthquakes and so much more categories to choose from! I picked the Kaitangata mine disaster. It happened on 21st February 1879 near Balclutha in Otago, we also did one about or school maps where we had to calculate the volume of 3D paper buildings we stuck on our school on a big A3 piece of paper.
My favorite piece of work.
My favorite piece of work was my school map. I chose a big navy blue A3 piece of paper to stick my 3d buildings on. This was one of my favorite activities because it was super fun to create then, cut them out and tape it together! In total I made 6-7 buildings within the past weeks and I loved them all! Except for the office because I accidentally crushed it and when I put it back up it got all wrinkly and the tape wasn’t sticky anymore but that doesn’t matter! I still like it. I measured the volume of my pool, I made the depth of the pool 6 or 7 cm squared each. Then I cut a hole the length and width of my pool out of my A3 piece of paper so I could tape my pool under the square hole I cut. I glued a little cute diving board too! I added a long blue ribbon into my pool to make it look like water.
How I did my mine model!
Back to talking to my mine model. I used a deep plain paper plate and cut a round door-like shape to make the entrance of the mine, I covered it with PVA glue and newspaper aka paper mache! I did lots of layers to make it hold in shape before I painted it dirt brown and add different shades of brown on my mine to make it look realistic. I painted it when it was dry and I painted a different shade of dirt brown on a small square cardboard as my base to stick my mine on. After everything dried I used clay to make a mini mine cart that goes into the mine on tracks to get coal.
I made a box with my clay and made it thick so it wont fall apart, then I added blocks of clay into it when it dried so I don’t have to make lots of fake clay coal and put it all in the box but just put it on a top layer. I used water with my clay to make it smoother to shape to make a coal like rounded shape then painted then dark grey, then I painted the box dirty grey brown and added copper streaks. It took a while to dry but luckily it was Friday so it would dry over the weekends in time for me to do it on Monday!
I had a lot more to do so I made the railway tracks with kebab sticks and toothpicks, I colored the kebab sticks and toothpicks copper. I cut off the sharp toothpick ends. I hot glued it all together and it looked like a shiny ladder! I glued the shiny copper tracks into the mine to make it look like its going in the mine and glued the crater box on the tracks to make it look like its going in the mine, even though it was bigger than the mine. I used leftover clay to make shovels and pick-axes and put them on a clay stand! I made fake rocks and even made a moving lever! That was my favorite thing to make. I added touch ups and done! I was finished!
I was super proud of my model and my school, here is a photo of my model, other peoples creations and what happened on the day!
